About Whisky Rover

Whisky Rover first started its journey across Scotland in 2010. Since then the site has become a bastion of independent views, unimaginative content, poor photographs and somehow increasingly popular. I'm fortunate to live in Scotland and have access to all the fantastic whiskies, distilleries and events that this country offers.

Whisky Rover is my (Jason's) voyage through whisky so always expect the unexpected, but at all times a frank and honest critique of the whisky at hand. If you need to make contact then you can reach me via one of the social media options or click on the email icon.

I'm well versed in whisky and live near Edinburgh. Others may proclaim to be whisky consultants for hire, influencers and authors on the subject. Good for them and their need to feel loved and in demand. I'd rather stick to discovering whiskies and broadening my knowledge. Unlike these folk who love to be heard, I tend to refuse interviews and publicity. However here's some of the questions I'm asked on a regular basis...

What is your favourite whisky?
Impossible to answer. I can run through a list of my ten iconic, the ten most memorable or those that captured a moment at distillery, or with friends.

What is your favourite distillery?
Truth be told, each distillery is different and warrants attention. Brora will always retain a special place but then you have Tormore, Deanston, Dornoch, Glen Garioch, Laphroaig, Balblair and the list goes on.

Do you do tastings?
On those rare occasions I'll open bottles from my stash more often than not for friends, or there have been special events in Edinburgh such my Closed distillery and lost malts event. In this day and age of investments and collectors I'm reminded more to open and share than ever before. As with most things in life, ask nicely!

Do you work with companies?
In a word no. There are some distilleries I get on fine with and on a rare occasion they may send something my way, but its very unusual nowadays. I've turned down PR approaches and will continue to do so. Part of Whisky Rover's appeal is its different and doesn't have the same old content that other sites harbour, with the same lukewarm or gushingly positive reviews.

Your reviews are quite critical aren't they?
That's because they're honest and like you, its my money I'm spending and its not an endless resource. More than ever we need more honesty in whisky when assessing if its worth purchasing a bottle; its an expensive commodity nowadays after all.

What is the Tormore 4?
Good question as I ask myself this now and again! It's a group of 4 well versed and questionable whisky enthusiasts brought together by their passion for Tormore and its whisky. We have a laugh, help others and spread the word of the Tormore.

How popular is Whisky Rover?
Far too much is the simple truth. Today over 40 thousand for the past month with the new template launch. However on average I'd say around 30-35k monthly. Where this is in the league table I really don't care. Whisky Rover isn't about sourcing freebies or attention; its the exact opposite. Launching with the whisky-rover.com URL in August 2017 marks a ground zero reboot. Let the fun commence!

What whisky sites do you recommend?
For all the whisky sites online there are only a handful I find myself visiting on a regular basis with WhiskyFun being an obvious starter. I've been a long term supporter of Malt-Review and I'm excited about WhiskyLifeStyle. There are others I'm sure, but I'll return to this list periodically.

That'll do for now...
