Taste: Peat Chimney Blended malt Scotch whisky
Rounding off the recent Wemyss Twitter tasting evening was the latest Peat Chimney expression which is an 8 year old blended malt Scotch whisky. The previous release was a 12 year old that picked up a few awards along the way before selling out and therefore set a decent benchmark for the brand.
By nature this is slightly younger and therefore dips below the £30 price bracket to reflect this. First up the details before we move onto the tasting itself.
Distillery: well its a blend made up of malt whiskies
Age: at least 8 years but there might be a little older stock in the mix
Strength: 40%
Price: expect to pay around £28
Colour: copper
Nose: Well some peat but not a raging Islay monster that's for sure. Very gentle on the nose some sugary sweet fruit around the fringes. A damp note, a hint of iodine a beach bone fire certainly hits home. Sea bream fillet with herbs. Reminiscent of the enjoyable 'dirty' Bowmore Cadenhead's bottled recently.
Palate: A nice intro Islay release before dipping into the big stuff. Pork crackling for the main course with a little TCP followed by honey madeleines for dessert.
Like the Caol Ila 12 year old this is one you can sit back, relax and enjoy. Far from a raging inferno of smoke this one has a more domestic appeal and approachability. Making it very good value for the asking price.
