Film Review: Shutter Island

Saturday, March 13, 2010

After much anticipation Shutter Island has finally arrived. Sadly despite my enjoyment of the source material, I found the film version to be under whelming and disappointing.

You cannot find fault with the production values or cinematography, which are tremendous and Martin’s keen eye for a classic shot. The problems commence with the adaptation, which does a reasonable job with taking the key moments. However the script is badly paced, misleading and far too long. The storm is mainly relegated to a sideshow and the tension and drama of the book erased. At times you find yourself struggling to maintain interest with onscreen events and the casting of DiCaprio in the main role doesn’t help this. For an ex-war veteran and US Marshall he lacks the scars and age to actually make the role believable and if you cannot connect with the lead role, then you’re in a whole heap of trouble.
