It is a shame to see Woolworths almost departing us now, what on the eve of its 100th anniversary. I have vivid memories as a kid down south going into the nearby branch (not for sweets!) and seeing the top 40 singles all laid out as splendid vinyl singles. Not many shops did that.

I've had a few bargains this month but despite the savings the visits are tinged with sadness. Of all the retailers to vanish from the high street in recent times this is the one I'll miss the most. Sadly Zavi never had an identity and Index wasn't a favourite haunt, as for USC, well that remains the fashion outlet of choice for neds.

The Woolies staff over the past few weeks have been friendly, helpful and very approachable despite their circumstances. A shame they've been let down by bad management and poor administration.
