Playing it safe

Friday, November 09, 2007

Well this week the increasingly safe Zane Lowe played four albums in full with various bits about the history of each, artwork and so on. The four albums were:

Nirvana - Nevermind
Led Zeppelin - IV
The Strokes - This Is It
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am

While its good to play albums in full without any interruptions, this selection confirms just how safe the BBC and its DJ's has become. The last time I can remember such an occasion was when John Peel (RIP) played the debut Truman's Water album, and forced us all to go out and find it. Even today, it remains a remarkable album and still unknown.

I would expect most music fans to have heard these albums, they are easy choices and in such totally wrong to be given this limelight. Very much a missed opportunity to shed some light on overlooked albums of recent and past times
